Mother of three, chef, and author of Were Bros, Carter Were, reflects on her evolving daily ritual of bathing. In this volume, Carter shares her joys, and challenges, of bathing through motherhood.
"Bathing for me has changed again recently since birthing my son not long ago. I don’t get to bathe when I want or for how long I want. It is dictated by my baby and how he is feeling. I usually bathe in the evening when he is chilled, my partner, Jack, will hold him for me and I jump in the shower quickly (usually with my other two kids at my feet). Often he hands him to me and I bathe him too because he likes it, then we get into bed together."
"If Jack is home in the morning sometimes I will jump in the shower alone. After a broken night's sleep it makes me feel alive again.

"My bathing routine changes often. With a newborn around you have little to no time for yourself and this changes as they get older. Not only do you have to bathe yourself but bathing your children is a big part of most days when they are small. I have three kids, they are 4,3 and 2 months. The older ones can now bathe themselves and before my son was born I was enjoying bathing alone morning and night."
"It is the few minutes of the day that I have time to myself to reflect on my day and take a breath before putting all the kids to bed or starting the day. I love taking a shower alone and even better a bath (when we had one).
We shower together most nights as we rely on rainwater to fill the tanks. It is small and squishy but I know when they are older I’ll miss them being so close to me. I cherish their small bodies and still can’t believe I grew them inside me and birthed them."
